Pumps for Purees

As production scales, transferring purees can become a challenge, especially when moving from boxes to barrels. This often leaves craft beverage and food manufacturers wondering about the best ways to transfer purees without damaging the product or introducing excess O2, all while making sure nothing goes to waste. 

At CPE Systems, we have two solutions which we feel capture most use cases.

Barrel Pumps

Barrel Pumps are the easiest way to manage transfers from totes and barrels. Built to interface directly with them, these permit the transfer of purees quickly and easily, while also being portable and easy to clean. The design of these pumps allows them to transfer from the bottom up, minimizing oxygen ingress and reducing waste.

When choosing a barrel pump, it’s important to look at the viscosity of the liquid you plan to transfer. Axial-flow impeller models like the F427 and FP430 top out at 1,000 mPas which can make it harder to move some high viscosity ingredients. Meanwhile, the F570’s progressive cavity pump can transfer up to 100,000 mPas, but due to its low flow rate (13 GPM) it can be too slow for large volumes.

Diaphragm Pumps

Diaphragm pumps are the Swiss Army Knife approach to tote transfer. A multi-purpose pump suitable for various functions across a facility; they’re often used in puree transfers due to their ability to handle extremely high viscosity, their self-priming capability, and capacity for suspended solids. Depending on the model, they can also often transfer faster than a barrel pump. However, while they can connect to the discharge port on IBC totes, pumping from barrels can present more of a challenge, requiring additional equipment.

While all the AODD pumps we carry are easy to disassemble and clean, the process is not as convenient as it is with a (much smaller) barrel pump.

Application Pump Reason
Low Viscosity F427 / FP430 Axial impellers produce high flow rates while gently moving low-viscosity products like juices, thin concentrates, and thin fruit purees.
High Viscosity F570 / Diaphragm Pump Progressive cavity pumps maintain nearly constant flow regardless of viscosity. Diaphragm Pump pumps also handle highly viscous products well and tolerate changing viscosities.
Shear-Sensitive F570 Smooth, continuous flow minimizes shear.
Large Suspended Solids Diaphragm Pump Diaphragm Pump pumps have large internal passages.
Foaming F570 Continuous, low-pulsation flow reduces agitation and helps minimize foam formation.
Aseptic Bags Diaphragm Pump / F570 High suction-lift make both pumps suitable for evacuating collapsing bag liners.
Drums F 427 / FP 430 / F570 Drum pumps are purpose-built for transferring products directly from drums with minimal residual product.
Small Batch Additions F 427 / FP 430 / F570 Easy operator control for dispensing ingredients into kettles or mixers. Progressive cavity pumps provide a steadier flow for batching.
